Since its inception, CZ Electronics has provided a working environment that fosters a culture of collaboration and empowerment. One of CZ’s longest-standing staff members, Tina, a Supervisor in the CZ factory, shares some of her experience as part of the team.
Meet the family
“My team thinks of me as more of a mother than a boss,” says Tina. She continues, “Sometimes, you need to go the extra mile to get the job done. And for me, that means we need to take a time out and have some tea and biscuits together at times.
“My favourite thing about working at CZ is that it gave me a purpose – a reason to get up in the morning. After 17 years here, I feel like I really belong. It gives meaning to my life, being with the people that I know. It’s more a family environment than a work environment. There are times when we have to put in extra hours or days, so it’s important that it feels like home”.
Tina has been married for 40 years and has three children plus 10 grandchildren. And when she isn’t working at CZ, she enjoys gardening. “Even when I’m not at work, I like to keep busy,” continues Tina. “When I am at CZ, the team always keeps me busy and that adds value to my life.
Learning and plans for the future
I’m planning on staying with CZ for another two years, as after that, it’s time for my retirement. And in that time, I am willing to give all it takes for the business. I hope that I can continue to act as a teacher to my team, so that they can continue to grow, and that what I do here is meaningful to someone else.
“CZ has provided opportunities for me to learn new things – like SMT soldering, even when I was a store lady and stock controller. It has been an ongoing learning process working at CZ. They have always been supportive of me educating and enriching myself. They encouraged me to do more, learn more and develop.
“My favourite memory of working at CZ that has stuck with me is working with John Van Antwerpen (former senior technician). He taught us so much about the work we do. He was a father figure, who was always there for staff members – both at work and personally. CZ feels very comfortable because of the relationships I have built.
“CZ feels safe – like home – and I can’t imagine working anywhere else”.
Empowering trust
CZ Electronics employs mostly women; the majority of whom are from previously disadvantaged backgrounds. The company is built on a culture of ongoing learning for staff, who are empowered to carve out long-term career paths through education and training, making South African products for South African people.
